Bernard continued down the moonless road as it turned into the shape of an upside down “V” and the yellow dashes passed by quickly. He let the windows down because it had cooled off to a nice 78 degrees, plus he wanted the fresh air to keep him awake. As he set the cruise again after coming to a 4 way stop in an unincorporated parish of, The Point, He felt a slight wiggle in the back end of the truck, which brought him out of his thought of his girlfriend. He thought, ‘hum, maybe I’m imagining things,’ and he continued to drive. His cell rang, as his mother was checking on his travel destination. He talked to her a few more minutes and hung up. As he flipped the phone closed, he felt the wiggle again, but this time he heard the pop and flapping of a blown tire, and said, “I’ll be damn.” He slowed down to a complete stop as he pulled off the road. He got out of the truck and walked around to the back passenger side of the truck. He looked to where he’d come from. It was dark. Then he turned and looked to where he was headed. It was dark. The only light came from his ruby read tail lights and bluish white head lights. He looked at the tire and mumbled, ‘at least it’s on the passenger side of the road.” About 30 minutes earlier, he’d only seen one other vehicle that passed him before he got to The Point. So he knew he was alone. He stood there and looked at his tire and shook his head. He looked at his watch, it was As Bernard proceeded to change his tire he heard something rustling in the thicket of the bushes behind him. He stopped jacking the truck up, to be able to hear better. But the noise stopped as well. He shook his head, thinking, ‘I’m hearing things,’ and continued on his task. He heard the rustling again. Bernard stopped again. This time he turned around. As he stood he saw the outline of a person standing within 10 feet of him. He couldn’t figure out whether it was a woman or a man, but for some reason, he wasn’t afraid. He said, “Hi.” The figure just stood there and looked at him. As he tried to adjust his eyes to the person he leaned forward to try to see better. He decided to walk closer, the grass was only knee high. As he got within 5 feet, the person said, “Bernard, don’t. Don’t come any closer,” and they held up their hand for him to stop walking. He stopped. He said, “Adrianne?” When he heard her voice he knew who it was. She said, “Yes.” He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out. Finally he said, “Why are you here?” She said, “To make sure you’re okay and to tell you to move on and let me go.” Bernard put his hands on his waist and turned his head. Then he looked back at her and said, “Adrianne, why’d you leave me? I didn’t get a chance to even tell you bye.” She said, “I know. I’m sorry. I was in so much pain. I was in pain in school.” He said, “Why didn’t you tell me?” She said, “I didn’t want you to worry and not finish your program. Bernard, you’re going places and I didn’t want to stifle your future.” He said, “So you knew all along?” Continue to next page
